Figtree Place: A Water Sensitive Urban Development
This case study presents Figtree Place; a residential redevelopment project created by the Newcastle City Council in association with their “Environment Management Plan”. The subdivision comprises of 27 residential units, each integrated with water sensitive urban design. The residential redevelopment implements rainwater tanks, infiltration trenches and a central basin for the retention of cleansed storm water. The paper gives detail on key features of the design and outcomes of the project.
Research shows that the expected total water savings of Figtree Place is approximately 60% and design methods yield almost complete storm water runoff. This demonstrative project presents key points which support the use of water sensitive urban design. Further improvements into design details are highly likely to present lower costs.
